The SME Climate Hub partners with Equipoise and Emitwise to accelerate global decarbonisation efforts

Emissions measurement is the first step on the journey to climate action

Initiated in 2020, the SME Climate Hub is a global initiative on a mission to empower small and medium-sized enterprises to take climate action, build resilient businesses for the future, and reach Net Zero emissions.

Businesses with under 500 employees account for 90% of global businesses and affect the livelihoods of roughly 2 billion people. To date, nearly 9,000 businesses have already made the SME Climate Commitment, committing to reach Net Zero by 2050 or sooner.

These smaller businesses will be a key part of the world’s transition to Net Zero as they are responsible for around 40% of global business emissions. However, many lack the support and resources to meet the ambitious climate targets they are being asked to set by customers, investors and regulators. That’s where the SME Climate Hub steps in.

“SMEs play a pivotal role in building a net zero economy. Their climate action can directly benefit local economies and positively impact upstream and downstream value chain emissions. It is essential these businesses have access to streamlined tools that help them understand the most effective pathways for decarbonization.”

Pamela Jouven, Director of the SME Climate Hub

The SME Climate Hub provides these businesses with free tools and resources to understand how to reduce their emissions, set targets and reach Net Zero. Among these, SMEs have access to free emissions measurement tools.

The SME Climate Hub transitions to new emissions measurement tools

We’re proud to announce that the SME Climate Hub has partnered with Emitwise and Equipoise to provide free emissions measurement tools to SMEs.

Recognising that the sustainability maturity of SMEs will vary, the SME Climate Hub is launching the partnership with two tools that can best support SMEs depending on where they are on their sustainability journey:

  • Equipoise’s Advanced Business Carbon Calculator: Our comprehensive carbon measurement tool analyses emissions across business operations and supply chains (Scopes 1, 2 & 3). The tool provides granular emissions insights to help organisations build effective decarbonisation strategies that accelerate their journey to Net Zero.

  • Emitwise’s Scope 3 Calculator: This tool helps businesses analyse their supply chain emissions through procurement data, set emission reduction targets, and develop decarbonisation roadmaps.

Through Equipoise’s work on supply chain decarbonisation, we’ve seen how pressure to decarbonise gets passed down the supply chain. It often ultimately lands on SMEs who don’t have the purchasing power to ask their own suppliers to decarbonise and must achieve reductions on their own.

To achieve the emissions reductions asked by larger organisations, SMEs will need accurate emissions measurement to focus their efforts on the emissions reduction initiatives with the most potential. With these tools, they’ll be able to do it accurately, efficiently, and, most importantly, for free.

“By providing our comprehensive carbon calculator to the SME Climate Hub, we’re ensuring cost is never a barrier to starting a decarbonization journey. SMEs generate around 40% of business-sector emissions (OECD), yet they are uniquely agile and innovative, making them prime drivers of meaningful climate impact when equipped with accurate, actionable measurement and support.”

The business benefits of measuring emissions and taking climate action

SMEs can now access these emissions measurement tools from the SME Climate Hub, and they’re also encouraged to make the SME Climate Commitment to halve their emissions by 2030 and achieve Net Zero by 2050.

For these businesses, the benefits of starting to measure their emissions and committing to decarbonisation are:

1. Improving efficiency: By measuring emissions, businesses can uncover inefficient business practices. For example, identifying opportunities to reduce energy consumption can reduce energy costs.

2. Managing business risk: As businesses proactively work to increase their resilience, they can protect themselves from climate change risks such as extreme weather events or projected supply chain disruptions.

3. Gaining a competitive advantage: By taking a step in their sustainability journey, businesses can become leaders in the fight against climate change and demonstrate it to their investors, employees and customers.

4. Enhancing access to capital: By demonstrating how proactive they are in minimising their exposure to climate-related risks, businesses can be attractive to investors and receive affordable lending fees.

5. Growing your business and brand: As members of the SME Climate Hub, businesses will be part of a network of like-minded businesses through which they can raise awareness of their mission and attract new customers.

All of this starts with accurately and efficiently measuring emissions. That’s why the SME Climate Hub, Emitwise, and Equipoise have partnered to allow SMEs to kickstart their sustainability journey.

“Using the Equipoise Carbon Calculator has simplified the process of measuring our carbon footprint and has helped us to expedite our approach to decarbonisation.”
